All in it together

with 12 comments

Brown bookOf course they are!

“We are all in this together”  may have been the most prophetic words uttered by Conservative Leader David Cameron following the post crash demise of the last Labour government, leaving an economy in tatters and the whole of Europe drowning in debt after the sage advice of Brown and Obama to governments and central banks to borrow more and print more money to keep the world floating happily along towards oblivion. Cameron’s words were meant to galvanise public opinion as we entered an age of austerity to tackle the worldwide mountains of debt and return the UK to a “balanced budget” after the profligacy of the Brown/Blair years, yet after two budgets from the coalition government the achievment of that aim does not seem to be approaching with any speed.

We had just gone through a Parliament awash with excess, the MPs expenses scandal had left a very nasty taste in the mouth and the reforms put in place have not done an awful lot to assuage public anger and resentment at what politicians are perceived to be doing with their time and our money, the News International phone hacking revelations and the subsequent Leveson inquiry will probably also confirm the public’s suspicions that our politicians are easy to influence and are seen to be far too close to some journalists and newspaper proprietors for the sake of good honest and open public governance.

Having taken what they think is statesmanlike stances during their years in office it may seem unedifying to some that former holders of great office now hawk themselves around on the world’s stage making an absolute fortune and banking their income not in a personal account, but into the account of a privately owned company specifically set up to reduce their liability to pay the full rate of UK tax. Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, and South Shields MP David Miliband all operate such companies and manage to reduce their tax liabilities by sums that some of us may never manage to earn in a year. Don’t get me wrong, we should all praise success, but if we are all in this together we should all be paying our fair share of taxes.

This “being in it together” though, is now becoming a catch phrase of the left, perhaps Cameron may regret having uttered those words in the first place, there are many who would just love to push them back down his throat, and if they have a reasoned cogent argument then why not? Trouble is, some are none too careful about republishing these words, take for example the septuagenarian Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart, invited by David Miliband to deliver one of his South Shields lectures:

“I have nothing but contempt for the expression ‘we’re all in this together.

That’s bullshit – we’re not all in this together,”

“The members of the cabinet are not in the same position as the people who live near me in Bermondsey. What we have seen is not so much a response to a global crisis but Tory policies as usual, masquerading under the claim of necessity.”

Putting aside the fallibility of memory, Stewart seems to miss the response to the UK crisis as well as missing the point on worldwide debt reduction, it does not look or sound so good bleating about the phrase “we are in this together” when one has resided in such luxurious surroundings as these in California:

The lofty left certainly do not so sound so chummy and down to earth when their wealth is revealed, the folks of Queensferry, Westoe, Trimdon, or Bermondsey must be choking with contempt at any politician/actor (hard to tell the difference with Tony Blair) talking about “being in it together”.

Beam me up Scotty, I want to be in it together with you 🙂

Does your email address express your personality?

with 3 comments

South Shields Labour candidate could perhaps have been a “Tiller Girl”

How does your email address sound and look to your friends? Must admit mine doesn’t exactly spark the imagination, and most other people just use their name(at)whoevertheispis(dot)com. However, every now and then one pops up that amuses, most of them are using Hotmail, Yahoomail, or Gmail and have some quirky link to their personality.

I recall that former Commons Speaker Betty Boothroyd used to be a dancing Tiller Girl, not sure how tall she is, and I wonder if a certain Labour candidate in South Shields for next month’s elections either knew her or had dancing or modelling ambitions of her own?

Joyce.longlegs(at)blahdeblah(dot)com conjures up all sorts of entertaining and strange thoughts.

Do you know anyone with a strange email address?

Primrose by election – Jarrow

with one comment

Six candidates will contest South Tyneside Council seat

This should be an interesting by election on February 25th, although it is not one where I expect to see the seat change hands (stranger things have happened, of course), I say that because Cllr. Khan reveals on his Twitter pager that Ken Stephenson, the Labour Party candidate was not really the man they wanted to field. Whether or not the voters in Primrose, Jarrow prove to be that much bothered by the choice of a Low Simonside (which is virtually South Shields country) man to represent Labour will be far more interesting to watch, along with the size of the turnout as we get closer to a general election, and the effect of the two Independent candidates fighting to mop up votes along with the Conservatives, Lib-Dems, and the BNP.

Cllr. Khan Tweet

The list of candidates with valid nominations at the close, noon today is:

Pete Hodgkinson – British National Party – Protecting British Jobs
Anthony James Lanaghan – The Conservative Party Candidate
Aaron Luke – Independent
David Alan Rice – Independent
Ken Stephenson – The Labour Party Candidate
Susan Heather Troupe – Liberal Democrats

The BNP were the first out of the starting blocks some weeks ago in Primrose so one would hope and expect that the other parties counter the arguments between now and the election date , to prevent the racist message being perceived as acceptable. Other than the two Independent candidates all of the others have previous experience in door knocking and facing the electorate in South Tyneside.

David Alan Rice has been in touch with the Corner Shop and sent me this delightful (cough, splutter) picture of himself alongside Cllr. Steve Harrison who is backing his bid to succeed. Mr. Rice had this to say:

I was born in Jarrow, Prudhoe Grove, Primrose 1960 and educated at Jarrow Central School after which I joined the armed forces, served with distinguished service during the Falklands war and in jungles of Central America.
I have been married to my lovely wife Carol since 1986, I have one son Aidan who coaches and plays Rugby, and I am a firm believer of charity within the community and the care and respect due to older residents of the borough who like my mother are suffering from the effects of Alzheimer’s.
At present I am self employed doing Domestic and Commercial surveys.

I am truly Independent not aligned to any group unlike the ‘Alliance’

Steve Harrison, David Rice

Any other pictures of candidates with large “stones” will be gratefully received(….err…. perhaps the Stones in pint glasses might look better though).

The election has been called to fill the vacancy in the Primrose ward following the sad and untimely death of veteran Labour councillor Barrie Scorer.

Old news is better than no news!

Adrian Pearson over at the Journal appears to be reaching that Christmas hiatus and winding down gently with a recycled “cheeky story” about South Tyneside Conservative councillor David Potts, without mentioning the Conservative Candidate for Jarrow councillor Jeff Milburn. It’s old news but better than no news at all in a newsman’s blog, even clllr. Khan was on to it the next morning!

Big question is, who pointed Pearson to the picture and supplied details of the story? I somehow cannot imagine that he routinely follows the Tweets of David Potts, Ahmed Khan or all the other councillors on his north-east patch, but I could be wrong. However as Christmas approaches and political stories begin to run dry I guess  he just needs something to fill his time, and it gives me a good excuse to redistribute a picture of the Cheeky Girls.

The Cheeky Girls

Don’t they all look pretty?

Conservatives have more to offer?

leave a comment »

Conservative ladies

Could they possibly get away with it?

Iain Dale asks can women get away with using sex in politics more than men?

Well, I offer…………yes, possibly, but on balance you’d never be able to get away with it in the UK.  The mock up above shows Conservative candidates Esther McVey (Wirral West), Joanne Cash (Westminster North), Louise Bagshawe (Corby), and Karen Allen (South Shields). OK so it’s not quite as provocative as the German poster featuring Angela Merkel and Vera Lengsfeld of the CDU, but as an alternative to the likes of Michael Gove, Eric Pickles, or Dominic Grieve, it has to be in with a shout.

Here’s the German poster which does not appear to be offending any Germans, male or female, looks like they are more used to injecting a little more fun into their politics on the continent.
German CDU poster

The caption below reads “We have more to offer”.

This post is entirely and gratuitously sexist, but just light hearted and for fun, and if Labour or Lib-Dem bloggers would care to suggest who they have to offer, I’m sure we’d appreciate the competition.

WAGs – Women Against Gordon.

Just another moment in quite an extraordinary day.

Andrew Allison has “had a go” at the same subject (metaphorically) and his wife has told him that she is not to be viewed as sexy, it’s a good job he didn’t get a copy of Gordon’s autographed picture from Caroline!

Conservatives at South Tyneside Civic Ball

Future South Tyneside Conservatives

Time to play with the monkey

This is fresh gossip, rather than the nine year old stuff, caught at South Tyneside’s Civic Ball held at the Temple Park Centre last weekend, a group of old and new Conservatives. Left to right Cllr. David Potts, Adele aged 21, Walter Armstrong MBE, President of Jarrow Conservative Association, Sarah aged 21, and Cllr. Jeff Milburn. The Jarrow Conservative Branch is enjoying an influx of new members at present to add fresh impetus to their campaigning and fund raising and Cllr. Potts is hopeful of starting a branch of Conservative Future in the constituency “to give these youngsters something to do”. I’m now waiting to hear similar signals from the South Shields Tories, and if CF is to be filled with members like these two stunners I might even lie about my age and marital status and join up!

It has not been confirmed who escorted Cllr. Potts home, nor whether Labour Cllr. Bill Brady (aged 99) really said he is about to defect to the Conservatives!

Oh and sorry about the awful lighting in the picture.

Cllr. David Potts and Vicky

Young guns secured for Jarrow

Jarrow Conservative Association is leaving it’s old stone aged blue rinse image behind as a stack of new members have joined recently, interestingly about a dozen of them are forming the younger ranks and there may even be enough to form a Conservative Future branch in the constituency, it just takes a little courage for someone to step forward and offer a lead!

I was at a small reception a few nights ago hosted by Cleadon and East Boldon Conservative councillor David Potts, where a few drinks were enjoyed and allowed some of the newer members to get to know one another and to make new friends with the old hands. (I was only there to catch the gossip.)

The picture shows David with Vicky one of the younger members that I met there, and perhaps this is also a little nudge to the South Shields Conservative Association to get recruiting too, Vicky has never been what one might consider politically active in the past so it was refreshing to see someone as young interested enough by David Cameron and the change that he represents to join the party. Vicky is 23 years old and professes to have never voted at an election yet, but things are about to change as she faces the challenges of campapigning for the Conservatives:

“Politics has never really interested me until now but I am tired of Labour and have been impressed with David and the other Conservative Councillors and the things they are doing in South Tyneside. They seem to be the only ones with the policies and ideas to make a difference. They will certainly be getting my vote,” she said.

If anything is to change in South Tyneside it is vitally important that young people take an interest in politics, both locally and nationally, and I think it’s great that Jarrow Conservatives have managed to invigorate their association with young blood. Come on South Shields it’s your turn next!

Cue all sorts of ridicule at the Monkey’s place (it cannot be helped.)

Probably the best advert in Europe?

Via Counting Cats
and also Freespace

(probably NSFW)

Fleggaard are a German retailer who are doing well out of the Danes, we all like a good bargain and many companies will bargain for a good advert that gets the message across. Fleggard have an outlet just over the border from Denmark, in Germany the VAT rate is 19%, in Denmark it is 25%, so many Danes are tempted to cross the border and shop at Fleggaard. In the commercial, the girls are writing ‘Siemens Dishwasher, 4,999 dkr.’ in the sky. Incidentally, the commercial is made for the internet, and will never be shown on Danish TV.

What a pity, I don’t think they realise the full potential of this marketing strategy. Do you think we could tempt Fleggaard to occupy ‘Woolies’ vacant spot in South Shields?
