In times of war….
…..you need friends around you
With friends like Charles Clarke, who needs enemies?
There is, however, a deep and widely shared concern – which does not derive from ideology – that Labour is destined to disaster if we go on as we are, combined with a determination that we will not permit that to happen.
Today Clarke explains his article and calls on Gordon Brown to “make his mind up” and “stand down with honour”, although it seems he doesn’t have the nerve to sink the dagger with his own hand.
Does Clarke fear for the safety of his seat?

A politician talking about “honour”? Don’t make me laugh.
Stop Common Purpose

The problem is perhaps only Clarke is thinking clearly from the view point of his party.
However the current crop of senior ministers have no interest in the long term future of the Labour party. They have jobs, and perhaps seats for only two more years then their careers are over ( look how many of John Major’s ex ministers are going to make it back into government ).
Its a classic tragedy of the commons problem from Labour’s view point. Their activists are future leaders are being betrayed by their current leadership determined to have their last few hours in the sun.
